The sleeves have a dolman - like cut. The dress has a front center seam with two triangular panels of fabric hanging loose. The dress comes with its croquis.
Born in Paris, around the turn of the 20th century, Madame Grès (nee Germaine Émilie Krebs, AKA Alix Barton, Alix) pursued sculpture before turning her interests towards fashion. Grès was initially a hat maker, but her eye for design soon propelled her into haute couture dressmaking. By the 1930s, Grès had made a name for herself and counted a number of famous women in her client list, including: Wallis Simpson - the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Matilda of Greece, Paloma Picasso, Grace Kelly, Marella Agnelli, Marie-Helene de Rothschild, Edith Piaf, Jacqueline Kennedy, Dolores del Río, Barbra Streisand, Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo.
During the German occupation of France in World War II, Madame Grès was ordered to design stark, utilitarian clothing, but defied the occupation government and continued to design sumptuous dresses in the red, white and blue of the French tricolour flag. Bewilderingly, despite being Jewish, German officers were said to have asked Grès to design dresses for their wives. Grès bravely refused. Both her refusal to design for the wives of occupying officers, and her refusal to design drab garments, played a part in the forced closing of her design house; her plenteous use of fabric during wartime was the excuse given.

Geoffrey Beene began his career in the 1950s, designing under numerous New York houses including Teal Traina, finally opening his own label in 1963. Beene was incredibly conscious of the human body, and was particularly regardful of the figure in motion - as Beene once said “Clothing is nothing until it hits the body." His designs were created to work with the client’s body, encasing it lightly and giving it a more artful structure. Beene's reinterpretations of dress formality, use of synthetics, and unusual combination of materials (accessories in acrylic and diamonds, for example), set him aside from his contemporaries who focused on the business of fashion, rather than the artistry of fashion.

A dreamy ivory/cream evening dress of couture quality design and execution. The dress is maxi length, with long sleeves, an A - line silhouette, and a somewhat loose bodice. The bodice is entirely covered in intricate floral lace, and has a high jewel neckline. The leg of mutton sleeves are primarily composed of solid fabric but features a delightful pleat at the outer seam that makes way for a panel of open lace, allowing the wearer's arm to peak through. Shoulder pads sewn into the gown. The cuffs of the sleeve have lace and feature pearl buttons. We're getting serious Princess Di vibes from this dress!

Amazing dress by Jean Paul Gaultier with sheer details characteristic of his adventurous and innovative designs. The garment is composed of two parts, a slip and overdress. The semi - sheer bold red body conscious slip dress has wide straps, a scoop neckline, and falls just above the knee. The overdress is sweater - like, and is composed of an incredible geometric devoree burnout cut velvet fabric that falls loosely over the slip, allowing the wearer's curves to be implied and seen hazily through the sweater. The dress has a high rib knit turtle neckline, rounded shoulders and bishop sleeves that burst forth from the neck. The sleeves are wonderful, with velvet tapering just below the elbow and rib knit fabric continuing down the lower arm, ending at the wrist. The hem of the dress is knit and features a loosely knit geometric pattern. Silk. Made in Italy.
