Roy Halston Frowick was born on 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa. He initially took inspiration to sew from his grandmother. He would create hats for his mother and alter clothing for his sisters. His foundation in fashion progressed in his teen years as he attended Indiana University for a short spell and then The Art Institute of Chicago while earning funds through creating windows displays. Hat making would be his first love and in 1957 opened his first shop. While he had a small but important following, it wasn’t until Jacqueline Kennedy wore her famous (Halston) Pillbox hat in ‘61 that he became an instant success. He rode the wave of fame and fortune for a while but once hats started to go out of fashion, so did Halston’s sales. Halston’s low point would prove to be a test for what was next in his life. After much experimentation, a failed collection, and the help of his well curated team, he developed the minimalist yet irresistible look we all know and love! He was a true creator of culture during his time. Halston’s work was revered within the studio 54 crowd, worn by all the “It Girls” and on the cover of popular magazines.

Beautiful intricately printed dress by Youssef Rizkallah for Malcolm Starr. The dress is maxi length, with an A - Line silhouette, long bishop sleeves with a wide cuff, a fitted bodice, and a wide jewel neckline. The dress is brilliant and colorful, with bright shades of green, yellow, orange, and purple offset with cream. The dress features a spectacular Art - Deco - meets - Middle - East pattern with swirling geometric forms offset by conspicuous florals including lotus designs. Truly fabulous.
Not much is known about Youssef Rizkallah’s childhood. He was born in Cairo in the 1920s and went to study at the École des Arts Decoratifs in Paris when he was 19. While in Paris, Rizkallah apprenticed under Jacques Griffe and Pierre Balmain. Rizkallah returned to Cairo and became wildly successful providing couture fashion to the Queen of Jordan and the wives of arab diplomats. In the 1950s he moved to Los Angeles on the behest of fellow designer Jean Louis. Rizkallah soon found himself collaborating with stateside designers including Luis Esteves and Malcolm Starr. Rizhallah then went on to create a womenswear line in 1975.

This full length dress has a slight flare below the waist with a beautifully inset contrast that follows the hem all the way up to the bodice. It features a wide scooped neckline and the same green floral contrast outlines the silhouette. Fun Fact: In 1954 Leonard was simply a textile company but in 1958 they invited Daniel Tribouillard to start a new fashion line venture. Daniel proved to be an indispensable asset to the firm and in 1960 invented a new method that allowed knits to be continuously printed! This method is still used today!

Interesting and Hypnotizing full length maxi by Leonard.
This spot on dress blends aspects of tribal art with autumnal colors on a black ground. It boasts a 70's style attached necktie and bishop sleeves that were popular for that era. Buttons are fabric covered and create a front closure. This dress is full length and the print is too entrancing to ignore as it zig-zags throughout the entirety of the garment.
It would be interesting to see how this dress would look styled with geometric or gold brutalist style jewelry.
Leonard was first a textile company then in 1954 Daniel Tribouillard joined the house and in 1958 began making garments. The prints are designer bright florals on silk jersey knit fabric. The house is still alive today and creates lines similar to those from the past preserving a unique style.

Wonderfully crafted multi scale print silk maxi dress by Bessi. This dress has an elegant mandarin collar that can be worn open or closed. Long sleeves are pinch pleaded at the cuff. There is a wide large scale floral print accentuating the waist and hem. The flowers fade from small to large down the front of the skirt. It is fully lined with peach "Bessi" monogrammed silk.

Amazing dress by Jean Paul Gaultier with sheer details characteristic of his adventurous and innovative designs. The garment is composed of two parts, a slip and overdress. The semi - sheer bold red body conscious slip dress has wide straps, a scoop neckline, and falls just above the knee. The overdress is sweater - like, and is composed of an incredible geometric devoree burnout cut velvet fabric that falls loosely over the slip, allowing the wearer's curves to be implied and seen hazily through the sweater. The dress has a high rib knit turtle neckline, rounded shoulders and bishop sleeves that burst forth from the neck. The sleeves are wonderful, with velvet tapering just below the elbow and rib knit fabric continuing down the lower arm, ending at the wrist. Beautiful gold and cream cocktail ensemble consisting of a dress and matching swing coat. The dress is knee length, with short sleeves, a bateau boat neckline, and a fitted sheath silhouette. The neckline features a curved Chinese design that complements the fabric of the ensemble. The coat is knee length as well, with a hem that lines up with the cocktail dress. The coat has long sleeves, a straight front with hidden closure near the clavicle, and an amazing accent collar that drapes around the wearers shoulders and rises above the neck for an elegant effect. The coat is structured but comfortable, with pleats on the back for ease of move and added grace. The lining of the coat is gold, and features stitched designs of Chinese symbols. Breast pocket is accented with a zig-zag folded ribbon trim. Simply divine and straight from the 60s! The dress was made for the Pee-X Clothiers Boutique inside Hong Kong's Ambassador Hotel in Kowloon.
The hotel opened in the 1960s and was famous for the massive 17 story tiled mosaic mural on its side, depicting Confucius visiting different Chinese provinces.

Astounding neon red evening dress ensemble consisting of a dress and long coat by George Stavropoulos! The red dress is maxi length, with spaghetti straps and a columnar silhouette. The dress features a thin, triangular, double layer of fabric that emerges from the neckline and falls down to the waist, adding a bit of complexity and movement to the dress. The sheer coat is maxi length as well, with a straight front and button closure at the neckline. The dress has amazing kimono sleeves with an open bottom, allowing for maximum sway and flutter. The dress includes a matching silk scarf.
George Stavropoulos was born in Tripoli in 1920. He studied fashion in Paris, and eventually opened his own salon in Athens in 1949, where he made a name for himself creating elegant chiffon draped grecian - style dresses often cut on the bias. He immigrated the United States in 1961, opening a boutique in New York where he continued to receive acclaim for his floating silk satin and chiffon creations. Stavropoulos created his gowns almost exclusively by hand, and did not use heavy ornamentation, preferring that his designs stand out due of their elegant, flowing silhouettes and fabrics.
Clients include: Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas, Lady Bird Johnson, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Barbara Streisand.
