Arnold Liebes was a furrier with trading posts in Alaska. In the early 20th century he made frequent trips to his outposts, documenting what he saw on his trips with a camera and his diary. His collection of photographs, manuscripts, and over 1000 anthropologically relevant items are available at the California Academy of Sciences.

Amazing pearl mink cape by Ben Kahn! This cape is thigh length, with a wide folded collar, and an amazing double breasted front. The collar can be folded up for warmth (exposing two brilliant buttons). The buttons are large and composed of pearlescent ivory lucite with sparkling rhinestone detailing. The cape features two arm slits for ease of movement. Lined in the most amazing ivory floral cropped velvet. Beautifully preserved!
Ben Kahn immigrated to the United States from his native Russia in 1907. After working his way up through the fur business in New York City, Kahn opened his own company in 1921, quickly becoming a known innovator in the fur trade. Kahn would introduce new fur cuts and colors, and in an unprecedented move, marketed fur coats to men. Kahn was also a good friend of Stanley Marcus of Neiman Marcus, and collaborated with him occasionally.
Clients include: Joe Namath, Joe Frazier and Julius Erving, and Elizabeth Taylor (she purchased a Kahn-Marcus collaboration coat in 1970 for $125,000).

This example of Christian Dior's early work is quite extraordinary. The New York label was made in America for the American market based on runway designs, and used many Couture standards known to some as Demi-Couture. Excellent, museum quality condition. Remarkable tailored cape and coordinating dress designed in a hounds tooth wool fabric. Knee length dress with front button placket. Black buttons. Long sleeves. Front button cape is molded to the shoulders with an exaggerated collar and a complement to the dress completing this amazing "New Look" suit. The beautiful ensemble, which appears unworn, is lined throughout omitting the sleeves. The panel on the bodice buttons and snaps into place. Tulle lines the panels of the skirt to add slight volume where intended. Side zipper.

Rare 1940s Madame Gres Couture Floor Length Black Wool Cloak

Madame Gres, was a genius and could could create gorgeous designs under even the most strict limitations. The gorgeous cloak is made of black wool, and features a rounded neckline as well as slits for arms. The wool is heavy, with strong, precise stitching. Designed by Madame Gres in the 1940s, this cloak reflects her talent for making art that thrives, despite the austerity measures enacted in France during and after WW2.
One Size
Born in Paris, around the turn of the 20th century, Madame Grès (nee Germaine Émilie Krebs, AKA Alix Barton, Alix) pursued sculpture before turning her interests towards fashion. Grès was initially a hat maker, but her eye for design soon propelled her into haute couture dressmaking. From the 1930s on, Grès had made a name for herself and counted a number of famous women in her client list, including: Wallis Simpson - the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Matilda of Greece, Paloma Picasso, Grace Kelly, Marella Agnelli, Marie-Helene de Rothschild, Edith Piaf, Jacqueline Kennedy, Dolores del Río, Barbra Streisand, Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo.
During the German occupation of France in World War II, Madame Grès was ordered to design stark, utilitarian clothing, but defied the occupation government and continued to design sumptuous dresses in the red, white and blue of the French tricolour flag. Bewilderingly, despite being Jewish, German officers were said to have asked Grès to design dresses for their wives. Grès bravely refused. Both her refusal to design for the wives of occupying officers, and her refusal to design drab garments, played a part in the forced closing of her design house; her plenteous use of fabric during wartime was the excuse given.
After the war Grès' began to design her famous Grecian goddess gowns. Although her earlier work reflected the sculptural, grecian motifs that she exhibited in her later work, she truly came into her own by designing the Grecian goddess gowns. Like her earlier work, the Grecian goddess gowns championed simplicity and the liberty of movement, and were designed with the wearer in mind: the body was to shape and mold the dress, not the other way around.
Although her career stretched across several decades, Grès designs still remain timeless and unparalleled.

The capelet is trimmed in plush, glossy black rabbit fur, that wraps around the neckline, adding an extra dose of luxury and warmth to the piece. The sumptuous fur, wool, and feminine design reminds us of the ensembles of character Lara Guishar in Dr. Zhivago.
George M. Simonton Is an alumnus of FIT, and got his start when his designs attracted the eye of Happy Rockefeller, who judged his work at the the New York State Pavilion Contest at The World’s fair. He went on to work with Dan Millstein, Calvin Klein, and at C’est Simone. Millstein has lectured at FIT and The Smithsonian Institute, and starred in “I’ve Got Nothing To Wear,” a program where he advised stylists who work with fashion victims in need of help. Simonton is currently working on collections for Saks Fifth Ave, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor.
