In 1943, as World War ii raged on, the Camerinos fled to Switzerland where Giuliana began designing handbags for local leather goods stores. Camerino founded the house “Roberta di Camerino” in 1945. The business was named after the 1935 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film “Roberta”; The song “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” was the last tune Camerino listened to before escaping to Switzerland.
Roberta di Camerino handbags quickly became known for their innovative use of patterned and colored fabric, two materials that had never been used in handbags. One of the few items available for use was bamboo imported from Japan; craftsmen heated up the bamboo, bending and molding them to form handles, locks, and frames. Bamboo detail bags were (and still are!) fabricated by various Italian artisans and fashion houses including Gucci.

We know and love Eisenberg for its fabulous rhinestone jewelry pieces and are delighted to share with you this fabulous handbag creation! In the 1940s Eisenberg briefly expanded its commercial reach by creating handbags, shoes, and garments; the production of these items was brief and limited. Therefore, they are extremely collectible because very few exist.
This handbag is composed primarily of soft black ulltra suede stretched over an a-frame handbag. The front of the handbag features two circular rhinestone clusters (what Eisenberg was best known for!) sitting on top of collar-like folds. The handbag has a silver - tone top handle and clasp. The interior of the handbag is lined in satin and has a large "Eisenberg Originals" label.
