Vintage Norman Hartnell Gold Lame and Mink Evening Dress and Matching Coat Stunning Norman Hartnell gold lame evening dress and matching coat. The shimmering A-line dress features a low scoop neck, a geometric stitched bodice, a low back, and a pleated slit at the center back of the skirt. The coat is knee length and features mink cuffs.
Hartnell began his career in the 1920s, using his University of Cambridge ties to acquire elite clients and dressing them for high prestige social events. His designs later caught the eye of entertainers such as Merle Oberon, Tallulah Bankhead, Evelyn Laye, Gertrude Lawrence, and Mistinguett. Hartnell's pieces continued to turn heads in the 1930s and 1940s, to design the 1930s and 1940s, and had even been appointed dressmaker to the royal family in 1938, designing the wedding dresses of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, the amazing coronation gown for Elizabeth II in 1953, as well as a gown for her first visit to the United States in 1956. Norman Hartnell defined a look that was the epitome of British aristocratic elegance; his work was lavish, restrained, and always flawless.

Mariano Fortuny Midnight Black Silk Peplos

Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo created this gown in a Venetian palazzo and it was originally purchased in 1919. Beautifully shaped in luxurious black silk the gown is delicately pleated in the secretive Fortuny manner with heat and ceramic rods. The silk was dyed several times to enrich the color. Murano glass beads are strung on silk cord along the seams providing a smooth graceful silhouette. The gown is inspired by the Greek chiton and meant to be worn with-out undergarments; a racy suggestion for the early 1900s. Hand rendered label on inner side seam. Displayed on a size 6 mannequin and considered one size.
This Peplos measures at 56" in length and 16" from shoulder to shoulder.

Historically Significant 1940s Madame Gres Grecian Goddess Silk Knit Gown in Black and Red

Historically important Grecian goddess gown by the legendary Madame Gres. This lavish yet austere, floor length, one shoulder gown features countless hand-stitched chiffon pleats from the shoulder to the bottom of the dress, echoing classical antiquity. The dress is accented by a dramatic red pleated drape emerging from between the bodice's black pleats and cascading down the front of the dress, towards the floor. The dress includes a 22 inch long red belt. The famous Gres label, as well as two stitched-in Stars of David can be found on the waist of the dress' lining.
Born in Paris, around the turn of the 20th century, Madame Gres (nee Germaine Emilie Krebs, AKA Alix Barton, Alix) pursued sculpture before turning her interests towards fashion. Gres was initially a hat maker, but her eye for design soon propelled her into haute couture dressmaking. By the 1930s, Gres had made a name for herself and counted a number of famous women in her client list, including: Wallis Simpson - the Duchess of Windsor, Princess Matilda of Greece, Paloma Picasso, Grace Kelly, Marella Agnelli, Marie-Helene de Rothschild, Edith Piaf, Jacqueline Kennedy, Dolores del Rio, Barbra Streisand, Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo.
During the German occupation of France in World War II, Madame Gres was ordered to design stark, utilitarian clothing, but defied the occupation government and continued to design sumptuous dresses in the red, white and blue of the French tricolor flag. Bewilderingly, despite being Jewish, German officers were said to have asked Gres to design dresses for their wives. Gres bravely refused. Both her refusal to design for the wives of occupying officers, and her refusal to design drab garments, played a part in the forced closing of her design house; her plenteous use of fabric during wartime was the excuse given. Found in this dress, Gres sew in a Star of David on either side of the gown, perhaps as a resistance statement during the war. Much research has been undertaken on this gown to determine its original owner to find out if perhaps this had been made for an allied or axis sympathetic individual. To date, we have been unable to determine the original client for which this gown was made.
After the war Gres began to design her famous Grecian goddess gowns. Although her earlier work reflected the sculptural, grecian motifs that she exhibited in her later work, she truly came into her own by designing the Grecian goddess gowns. Like her earlier work, the Grecian goddess gowns championed simplicity and the liberty of movement, and were designed with the wearer in mind: the body was to shape and mold the dress, not the other way around.
Although her career stretched across several decades, Gres designs still remain timeless and unparalleled.

Beyond fantastic..... is this RARE Pierre Cardin fuchsia ruffled silk taffeta long sleeve gown. This runway piece, designed in the early 1980's, was a show stopper at the Ebony Fashion Fair. Since its unveiling, the gown has lived amongst the gowns in the collection of Mrs. Johnson -the creator of the historic fair- and was never worn again. Gorgeous deep pink with layers and layers of billowing, pleated fabric add extre depth, dimension, and cause for discussion discussion! Gorgeous ribbon at high neckline frames the face perfectly. The gown fastens via a back zipper, two hook-and-eyes and a snap closure. Unbelievable piece by Pierre Cardin, created in the Post Modern era.

Early 1980's black with multi-color tropical floral print long sleeve dress with fantastic fabric flower at neck. This Pauline Trigere creation has long sleeves which billow out and taper down to a fitted wrist. There is a 5" zipper closure at the end of both sleeves. The waist is accentuated with a fabric belt that is reversible and closes by two hooks and a snap. A single fabric flower is accents the front neckline on this imported fabric piece. This fitted indigo taffeta and black velvet dress has a sweetheart neckline with optional halter top straps, and is ankle length. The velvet dress has more than a passing similarity to another of Murray Arbeid's designs - the 1987 red and black velvet flamenco ball gown made famous by Princess Diana! The gown was later sold in 1997 at Christie's Auctions in Manhattan for $25,300.00, to benefit cancer and AIDS charities. Our own Murray Arbeid gown features a dramatic, refined, and absolutely fascinating origami-like pleated embellishment that runs from the upper left neckline, down to the left mid-hip, and stretches across in a triangular-shape, to the right mid-hip, ending in an open fan fold detail.
