Gilbert Adrian, one of the most coveted and collectible Fashion Designer's of the early 20th century, designed costumes for early American Hollywood Studios and Starlets. He dressed stars such as Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, and Gene Harlow to name a few, and created costumes for movies as varied as Anna Karenina to the Wizard of Oz. Very few of his pieces come up for acquisition, and even fewer, such as this coat, are sold in perfectly wearable condition. The coat came perfectly stored from a Houston oil heiress. Adrian sold custom designed pieces for specific boutiques and individuals as well. Made in the 1940's of wonderful wool herringbone fabric, the coat has four working pockets, with two that have decorative flaps with buttons. There is a buttoned flap at each shoulder as decoration. Fully lined in silk.

Adrian was born Adrian Adolph Greenberg, into a Connecticut family of Russian, Bohemian, and German Jewish descent. Adrian, also known as Gilbert Adrian (a more marketable combination of his father's first name and his own), studied at the New York School for Fine and Applied Arts, now known as Parsons School of Design, before transferring to the school's satellite campus in Paris in 1922.
While studying in Paris, Adrian discovered his passion for costume design after he was hired by the great songwriter Irving Berlin, to design costumes for Berlin's "The Music Box Revue". In 1926 Adrian signed a contract with Cecil B. DeMille, and in 1928, when DeMille moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Adrian went with him. During his time at MGM, Adrian designed costumes for over 250 films, including the infamous ruby slippers, from "The Wizard of Oz", handling period costumes and contemporary wardrobes. Adrian's contemporary designs were elegant and sought after, and although not perfectly historically accurate, his period costumes, with their exaggerated features and dramatic aura, served to emphasize the narratives Adrian was working with. His film designs were so popular that many of them were adapted for retail in New York, and his costume sketches were often published in Vogue.
Adrian left MGM in 1942 to open his own boutique in Beverly Hills, later opening one in New York. Adrian's distinct straight-shouldered, slim-jacket, pencil skirt look set the everyday dress tone of the 1940s, and his voluminous, beaded evening gowns dominated the luxury design landscape. Adrian's pieces, with their distinctive bold silhouettes, contrasting colors, flora and fauna motifs, and exquisite beading and embellishments, drip with luxury, and are as timeless as they are glamorous.

Amazing camel beige wool coat by Bill Blass! The coat is midi length, with long sleeves, a luxurious fox fur shawl collar, and a wrap style closure with matching wool belt. The fur collar is composed of plush golden fox and falls down to the waist for extra style (and warmth).
Bill Blass grew up in Depression - era Indiana, where he sought refuge from the bitterness of life in cinemas. Blass looked up to the silver screen and found inspiration in the leading ladies and their fantastical costumes.
Blass studied at Parsons School of Art and Design in New York, funded by his winnings from a Chicago Tribune dress design contest, and later by his commissioned sketches for Seventh Avenue garment houses. Blass’ career and education were interrupted by WWII, where he was assigned to US 603rd Camouflage Battalion, a part of the famous “Ghost Army” Allied collaboration known for their creative deception techniques.
After the war, Blass remained in New York, working under Anne Klein, Anna Miller, and Maurice Rentner. In 1970, Blass purchased and renamed Renter’s firm.
Blass achieved internationally recognition when he joined the American team of designers -consisting of Stephen Burrows, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and Anne Klein with Donna Karan- that was to face off against the French team of designers -Yves Saint Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, Marc Bohan for Christian Dior, and Hubert de Givenchy- in the infamous “Battle of Versailles” fashion show.
Blass was well known for his couture take on sportswear. He would make traditional cuts in luxurious fabrics, with incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. His opulent sportswear was unparalleled, and in pairing a cashmere cardigan with a silk gown, he found new innovative ways to mix it into his formalwear. Glass was also known to be very hands on with his business, lending his pieces for benefits, and touring and making appearances in department stores that were putting out his new lines.
