Late 1970s Galanos Eggplant Purple Wool Cape / Cloak with Gorget & Epaulettes

Description

Perfect for fall and elegant, comes this floor to ankle length cloak by James Galanos. This fabulous cloak is a striking jewel - like eggplant purple, with a front closure that runs up the the neckline and under the gorget - like flap at the neck. The quality of fabric, design, and execution are marched only by the garment’s condition.

The military theme continues at the shoulders, which are accented by epaulettes featuring the same buttons fastening the gorget to the cape. Arm slits for ease of wear. Fabulous.

James Galanos spent the early years of his fashion career under the tutelage of Hattie Carnegie, costume designer Jean Louis, and Parisian couturier Robert Piguet. His experiences with these master designers informed his luxurious-but-not-ostentations designs. Throughout his entire career, Galanos did not once expand his brand, eschewing a mass-market paycheck. Among his clientele were Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Rosalind Russell, Diana Ross, and First Lady Nancy Reagan. Exclusive and opulent, Galanos is known for making the finest, most elegant garments.
