Luxurious green, black, yellow, purple, and pink double breasted silk coat by Ronald Amey. The coat is knee length, has long sleeves, a loose turtleneck collar, and a high, fitted bodice with two columns of four glossy, black buttons. The print of the coat resembles a check print made abstract, or even a Nam June Paik glitch art piece! Based on the innovative print, we assume the coat is a collaboration between Amey and famed renowned textile designer Tzaims Luksus. Fabulous vintage coat ahead of its time!
Ronald Amey was best known for his bold, dramatic evening wear and coats. His use of textiles was unparalleled, combining bold prints and bright colors in innovative ways. Amey often collaborate with renowned textile designer Tzaims Luksus, who in 1965 became the first person to win a Coty Award for fabric design.
Amey began his fashion career in California, designing a dress for Gisele MacKenzie; she was to appear on the Jack Benny Show. He started out small, working on his craft at night, and holding a day job as a delivery man. At one point Amey tried to deliver dress sketches along with some groceries to Lucille Ball. Desi caught him and tossed him out on the sidewalk.
Amey joined the airfare during the Korean War, soon befriending and designing for the officers’ wives. After his service, Amey went on to study at the Parsons School of Design in New York.
After graduating, Amey went on to work for a number of design houses, including Arnold Scaasi. In 1959 Amey partnered up with Joseph Burke; the two had met while in the military. The Burke Amey clothing line was successful, lasting until the 1970s, and was sold in department stores across the United States. Amey later went on to design for Aurora Ruffolo.
Amey had a hand in establishing a fashion course at Mount Mary College (now University) in Milwaukee.

This same ensemble is found in a number of museum collections including the FIDM archive (of which a photograph is included). Striking 1960s Rudy Gernreich for Harmon Knitwear dress and sweater set. The playful ensemble consists of a solid black long sleeve pullover sweater with princess seams, accent belt, solid white round flat collar, and short red bow. The dress underneath the sweater is short sleeved, with a jewel collar, and a bell - like silhouette with a skirt flaring from the bust. The bold colors play off of each other, and in unison create an eye-popping ensemble that works as a perfect example of the avante garde, innovate, adventurous designs Rudi Gernreich was known for!
Born in Vienna, Austria, Rudolf “Rudi” Gernreich developed his love for high fashion from his aunt, Hedwig Müller, who owned a dress shop. At the age of eight, after his father -a stocking manufacturer who had served in World War I- committed suicide, Gernreich began spending more time at his aunt’s shop, learning about fabrics, the dress trade, and sketching her designs for the Viennese elite. After having seen his sketches, Austrian designer Ladislaus Zcettel offered a 12-year-old Gernreich a fashion apprenticeship in London, but his mother, Elisabeth, refused as Gernreich was still very young.
In 1938 Gernreich and his mother immigrated to Los Angeles as Jewish refugees fleeing the German Anschluss. Life was difficult, and for a time the family subsisted on pastries Elizabeth baked and Rudi sold door to door. Gernreich’s first job was preparing cadavers for autopsy; although the job was grim, Gernreich claimed it gave him an opportunity to study anatomy, “I do smile sometimes when people tell me my clothes are so body-conscious I must have studied anatomy. You bet I studied anatomy.”
Inspired by modern dancer Martha Graham, Gernreich joined the Leslie Horton Modern Dance Troupe from 1942 to 1948. Dance provided Gernreich with an understanding of motion and how clothing moved with the body. Gernreich became a costume designer, eventually becoming a freelance designer. Gernreich worked for dress manufacturers in California and New York, where he was expected to base his designs off of the already-popular “New Look.” Gernreich subverted expectations of a feminine nipped-waist look when he presented his avant grade, mod designs. Gernreich established his own company in 1960, and also began designing dramatic ready-to-wear sportswear and casual knitwear pieces for Harmon Knitwear
Although high-end, Gernreich created works that were youthful and fun, showcasing his strong understanding of shape, color, form, and the human body. His designs sought to liberate the female form from structured fashion, and to challenge reigning beauty and gender norms. Gernreich spearheaded the mod minidress movement, and among his most scandalous designs are bathing suits with cutouts, topless nightgowns and dresses, thong bikinis, body decals, dresses with vinyl cutouts, and androgynous pantsuits. Gernreich also designed the iconic “monokini” and the “no-bra” bra that was the antithesis of the structured bras that dominated the 1960s, lead the “Total Look” movement that involved a fully-matching outfit, including shoes, coat, hat, and undergarments, all in optical art inspired prints, and produced a conceptual collection in 1970, featuring reveling yet utilitarian unisex clothing that was meant to represent Gernreich’s vision of the future of fashion. Gernreich even produced the clothing in the very first fashion video, “Basic Black: William Claxton w/ Peggy Moffitt.”
In 1967, Time magazine declared Gernreich to be “the most way-out, far-ahead designer in the U.S,” and with his innovative, experimental, adventurous designs, it would be difficult to deny that Rudi Gernreich was a designer ahead of his time.

We love this fantastic, bold shift dress and jacket by Saks! The dress falls below the knee, is sleeveless, and has a faux turtleneck with a tie - able bow accent. The dress has a blouson waist, and the bodice is accented by tuxedo blouse pleating. The jacket is waist length, with long sleeves, and a jewel neckline with no collar. The fabric is AMAZING. A psychedelic, almost neon background of blues, greens, oranges, and purples swirled together in Ebru - like twists. He got his start in 1951 working for Elizabeth Arden, and in 1959 Sarmi opened his own eponymous label that would last until the 1970s.

1960s Stavropoulos Black Silk Evening Dress

Stunning black silk maxi length empire waist evening dress by George Stavropoulos! The evening dress is strapless with the slightest sweetheart neckline -the mostly straight neckline bows gently in at the sternum. The empire waistline of the dress is accented by a deep black velvet ribbon that wraps around the wearer's body. The dress is topped off (literally!) by several gorgeous layers of sheer black silk chiffon. The chiffon emerges from the neckline and streams down the dress -lightly skimming the black body of the dress- ending in layers and layers of flowing ruffles at the hem. The chiffon gathers at the back of the dress, creating a very small, subtle train - like effect. The empire waist coupled with the flowing layers of chiffon seem to reference Stavropoulos' Greek heritage, harkening back to the fashions of antiquity. The dress floats beautifully when worn.
George Stavropoulos was born in Tripoli in 1920. He studied fashion in Paris, and eventually opened his own salon in Athens in 1949, where he made a name for himself creating elegant chiffon draped grecian - style dresses often cut on the bias. He immigrated the United States in 1961, opening a boutique in New York where he continued to receive acclaim for his floating silk satin and chiffon creations. Stavropoulos created his gowns almost exclusively by hand, and did not use heavy ornamentation, preferring that his designs stand out due of their elegant, flowing silhouettes and fabrics.
Clients include: Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas, Lady Bird Johnson, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Barbra Streisand.

We spotted Lupita Nyong'o paying homage to Valentina by wearing an amazing piece to the Entertainment Weekly SAG awards pre-party. This beauty of a dress takes on the persona of a blouse, with heavily beaded collar, placket and cuffs. The top layer of fabric has a floral beaded pattern. This two piece midi skirt and top ensemble was acquired from the estate of Claudette Colbert, preeminent Hollywood Golden Age leading lady. The top features red and green glass seed bead and chandelier bead loop fringe created by the legendary Maison Lesage. The dress features a delicate abstract floral design in gold embroidered passementerie, with rhinestone, sequin, and gold bead accents. The A-line dress has a tapered waist emphasized by a belt composed of three rows of gold passementerie with sequin details. This opulent dress is highly bejeweled and shimmers beautifully. 1968 Christian Dior Haute Couture Floral Lattice Lace Mod Dress Original Design

Truly Couture and intricate floral dress designed by Marc Bohan for a New York artist and philanthropist that was considered Rockefeller's favorite grandchild*. A true lover of the art of fashion and friend of Dior and other designers such as Madame Gres and Yves Saint Laurent, the gown's owner treated each piece designed for her as if it belonged in a museum, including keeping each original sketch (croquis) and fabric swatch. We have decided that the two items (the dress and the art) must be sold together as the dress was originally conceived and ultimately executed.
The dress hits just above the knee, has long sleeves and a high but loose mock turtleneck collar. The dress consists of a dress layer organza fabric topped by and hand sewn to a deep blue floral lattice lace. The sheer fabric peeks out from under the lace at the collar, sleeves, and hem. The dress' waist is accented by a blue gross grain ribbon with a bow at the front, topped by a white, organza rose. Lined with a silk slip hand sewn and attached with thread chains. Such art!
Beautiful Bonus: The ninth image displays the design's illustration s as well as a fabric sample of the flower lace and is in and of itself a piece of art worth of hanging in a museum!

Wonderful late 70’s dress featuring the iconic geometric forms Bessi was best known for! The dress falls below the knee, has long sleeves, a jewel neckline, and a faux wrap skirt with free panel. The neckline, cuffs, hem, and waist of the dress are highlighted by a narrow ribbon - like print of stacked geometric flowers. The shoulders feature a slight structured puff to them, forseeing the large accent shoulders of the 1980s. Print includes the subtle but scintillating "Bessi" signature.
Averardo Bessi has been producing colorful, playful, and intricate textile designs since 1950. Bessi' first collection was presented to the world in 1968, quickly leading the designer to become an internationally known force.

Wonderfully crafted multi scale print silk maxi dress by Bessi. This dress has an elegant mandarin collar that can be worn open or closed. Long sleeves are pinch pleaded at the cuff. There is a wide large scale floral print accentuating the waist and hem. The flowers fade from small to large down the front of the skirt. It is fully lined with peach "Bessi" monogrammed silk.

1970s Adele Simpson Black Velvet Gold Metallic Obi Evening Dress

Elegant evening dress in sumptuous velvet with brilliant metallic details by Adele Simpson. The dress falls just above the knee, has a wide bateau boat neck, and 3/4 length sleeves. The sleeves are voluminous and gather at the elbow. The dress features a gold metallic panel at the waist - no doubt inspired by the obi kimono belts Simpson saw on her travels to Japan! The panel is accented by a twisted braid belt with leaf clasp. Neck to waist zipper in back for closure.
Adele Simpson was born to Latvian parents, and in her childhood she performed in vaudeville productions; at one point she danced with Milton Berle!
Simpson began her career working in 7th Avenue fashion houses Ben Gershel and Mary Lee. In 1949 Simpson bought Mary Lee and Renamed it “Adele Simpson Inc.” Her company was situated in New York’s famous Garment District, and produced ready-to-wear garments inspired by French Couture. Her pieces were available in department stores across the United States, including Saks Fifth Avenue and Bonwit Teller.
Simpson stretched the limits of textiles, and had a hand in popularizing cotton outside of common everyday wear. She traveled frequently and drew inspiration from the countries and cultures she experienced. She frequently incorporated Indian, Turkish, and Japanese motifs in her work.
