Gianni Versace began his career in fashion early, working in his mother’s dressmaking companyin Reggio. He moved to Milan in 1971, and in 1972 Versace designed his first collections for Genny (incubator of such talents as Christian Lacroix, Guy Paulin, and Giorgio Armani), Callaghan, and Complics. Versace struck out on his own in 1978, launching “Gianni Versace Donna.” In 1989 he opened “Versace Atelier,” a couture label. In 1989 he and his sister created “Versus,” a ready - to - wear diffusion line for younger clients. Versace created slender, sensual designs in bright and bold colors meant to shine a spotlight on the wearer.

Clients include: Princess Diana, Elizabeth Hurley, Elton John, Michael Jackson, and Princess Caroline of Monaco.
